I think I was inspired by the woman I met at the bus stop this weekend. She transfered three different buses both ways to visit her beloved husband at the cemetery. Then a couple days ago I mentioned to my Mom that Valentine’s Day would be our 13th dating anniversary. She replied "Wow really 13 years, you know my parents were married on Valentines Day". "Um No", I couldn’t believe it, how did I miss that important bit of information my whole life? With love in the air and flowers on every street corner, I decided today was the day to do something I have been putting off for a very long time. I visited my grandparents grave for the first time since my grandma Jo passed away almost four years ago. I figured it was the perfect day to do it, since it was their 67th anniversary and all! I don’t know why I haven’t visited and paid my respects sooner. I drive by the mausoleum often and every time I think about them. Perhaps it is because they are located down in the basement, which I always remember as a little dark and creepy.
On my way I decided to be practical and buy some artificial flowers (purple of course). I did a quick stop at Michael’s Craft Supply for flowers. While I was there I had to visit the Martha Stewart aisle. I ended up buying a little banner and pink glitter letters. I spelled "LOVE" on the banner and planned to hang it somewhere on their plaque. Once I arrived I noticed that the outside looked really run down and as I entered I was surprised at how cold it was inside. But then I looked up at the walls and saw a rainbow of artificial flowers and instantly felt much warmer. I vowed to return again this summer with fresh flowers from my garden. Once I got downstairs I realized that it wasn’t dark and creepy at all. It was nice to see their names together on the wall and to know that inside they were side by side. Looking at the wall I couldn’t believe it has been four years since my Grandma died. She was super spunky and cute and I miss her very much. She missed my Grandpa so much the last 20 years of her life and always spoke lovingly of him. I am sure they were excited to be celebrating their anniversary together again.
The photo above is my favorite image of my grandparents. I don’t know anything about it except that they are very young and very happy.
My Mom was telling me about their wedding and said it was very informal. Just a few friends and a judge. It took place at a friends house with a nice view of the Puget Sound. It was simple and there were no photos. This has been driving me crazy, I can’t believe there isn’t a single photo. I have always wanted to time travel. All day I was thinking how fun it would be to travel back to Valentine’s Day 1941 and photograph Howard Osby and Josephine Nino tying the knot. Look at how cute they are, they would have been the sweetest couple to photograph!
